For spiritual conversation in groups to be life-enhancing, a way of relating needs to be established which encourages a meaningful exchange but also guards against our natural human tendency to descend into argument. This becomes possible when participants agree to:
- Listen carefully and respectfully to others.
- Maintain an appropriate level of self-disclosure.
- Respect the keeping of confidences.
- Avoid judgment and personal criticism.
A suitable interpersonal environment is also supported by:
- A welcoming place of meeting.
- Suitable engaging stimulus material.
- A clear and simple methodology.
- Conscious recognition of the silent presence of the Divine.
The presence of a skilled facilitator is also particularly beneficial.
